Artificial Intelligence Arms Race Creating Multi-Billion-Dollar Opportunity

May 27, 2020 - Baystreet.ca

Artificial intelligence is the next big military advantage. For example, in early 2019, the U.S. announced a strategy for harnessing AI in many parts of the military including. Intelligence analysis, decision-making, vehicle autonomy, logistics, and weaponry, reports Technology Review. Along the way, it’s creating a multi-billion-dollar opportunity. In fact, according to the U.S. Army, “The AI market was more than $21 billion in 2018, and it is expected to grow almost nine times larger by 2025. AI systems provide predictive analysis to interpret human inputs, determine what we most likely want, and then provide us with highly relevant information.”

That’s opening a sizable opportunity for top companies such as Patriot One Technologies Inc. (TSX:PAT)(OTCQX:PTOTF), Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT), General Dynamics Corporation (NYSE:GD), Northrop Grumman Corporation (NYSE:NOC), and NVIDIA Corporation (NASDAQ:NVDA).

Patriot One Technologies Inc. (TSX:PAT)(OTCQX:PTOTF) BREAKING NEWS: Patriot One Technologies Inc. wholly-owned subsidiary Xtract Technologies announced it has secured a $199,000CAD contract with Canada’s Department of National Defence through the Public Works and Government Services Canada Division, as part of the Innovation for Defence Excellence and Security (IDEaS) Program.

Operating covertly is key for Army operations and the “Now you see me, now you don’t” project is looking for solutions to actively modify the visual and infrared signatures (the pattern emitted by an object) of Army platforms in order to decrease detectability. Xtract AI proposes to leverage recent advances in deep learning and computer vision, along with novel deep learning technology to develop a system capable of assessing the efficacy of any existing or developed adaptive and multi-spectral concealment and camouflage technologies or materials. This will guide the development of technologies that optimally reduce visual and infrared detection of soldiers and vehicles, and enhance the performance of materials designed to eliminate detection in dynamic environments in real time.

The proposed system will combine two deep learning components: a soldier and vehicle detector; and a soldier and vehicle concealer. The detector will be a computer vision model that is able to identify people and vehicles from visual and infrared video streams. Meanwhile the concealer will be a computer vision model that uses real-time information from the context (e.g., background visual and heat patterns) to determine the optimal visual and infrared signature to facilitate concealment.

Using these two components, several outstanding problems with soldier and vehicle concealment can be addressed. Concealment systems will be able to be assessed, for example the efficacy of new uniforms, textiles and vehicle add-ons. Pitting the two components against each other will also facilitate the development of optimal concealment methods. Additionally, the concealer will be trained to generate modified visual and infrared signatures that are able to prevent detection by the deep learning detection system.

“We’re delighted the Innovation for Defence Excellence and Security (IDEaS) program selected us to work on this project,” said Martin Cronin, CEO of Patriot One Technologies. “utilising Xtract AI’s knowledge of artificial intelligence, and data and video analysis we hope to be able to assist the Canadian Army in their ability to operate covertly, thus keeping our soldiers safer.”

Other developments from around the markets include:

Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) and Sony Semiconductor Solutions announced they are partnering to create solutions that make AI-powered smart cameras and video analytics easier to access and deploy for their mutual customers. As a result of the partnership, the companies will embed Microsoft Azure AI capabilities on Sony’s intelligent vision sensor IMX500, which extracts useful information out of images in smart cameras and other devices. Sony will also create a smart camera managed app powered by Azure IoT and Cognitive Services that complements the IMX500 sensor and expands the range and capability of video analytics opportunities for enterprise customers. The combination of these two solutions will bring together Sony’s cutting-edge imaging & sensing technologies, including the unique functionality of high-speed edge AI processing, with Microsoft’s cloud expertise and AI platform to uncover new video analytics opportunities for customers and partners across a variety of industries. “By linking Sony’s innovative imaging and sensing technology with Microsoft’s excellent cloud AI services, we will deliver a powerful and convenient platform to the smart camera market. Through this platform, we hope to support the creativity of our partners and contribute to overcoming challenges in various industries,” said Terushi Shimizu, Representative Director and President, Sony Semiconductor Solutions Corporation.

General Dynamics Corporation (NYSE:GD) announced it was awarded a new contract by the U.S. Department of State (DOS) Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs (INL) to support its Western Hemisphere Program (WHP).
