For years, perceptions of a technologically advanced future have captivated societies through fictitious cinema, where computing systems appear to dance in mid air while in operation. Bearing witness to such spectacle appears to have driven the next generation of creative minds towards converting these ideologies into reality, generating an euphoric user experience and advancing the computing system of tomorrow, from the digital pages of yesterday’s World Wide Web to the digital spaces of tomorrow’s “Spatial Web”. At last, the dreams of tomorrow are upon us, as the future becomes present through the creation of Web 3.0 and the power of the Spatial Web contains the blueprints of a smarter, advanced society.

So, what exactly is Web 3.0? The concept, somewhat recently developed, appears to remain fictitious to many who cross its path. Interestingly enough and without realizing it, many have likely experienced some form of the core components of Web 3.0, through the use or research of technologies such as virtual reality, artificial intelligence, or decentralized blockchain applications, to name a few.

While the internet has evolved from the early, text-based two-dimensional webpage to a more interactive, user-generated and socially consumed content creation application, Web 3.0 aims to drastically expand on user utility. This can theoretically be achieved through the combination of next-generation technologies such as AI, VR/AR, IoT, Blockchain, Robotics and 5G and bridge the gap between the physical and the digital world, creating a smarter, more technologically advanced and user-friendly human experience. Although the value appears to exist somewhere out there in the future, the ability to capitalize from such combinations of technologies is already underway through what has been deemed the future of Web 3.0, the Spatial Web.

User experiences with the web have forever been two dimensional while we continue to reside in a third dimensional world. When we stop to consider the technological pace of progress that continues to drive desire, it was only a matter of time before technologies such as virtual reality developed, to gift humanity a third dimensional user experience like the world we live in. The Spatial Web was created to digitize our 3D world, taking the spaces around us and mapping them into a third dimensional world where the likes of artificial intelligence and augmented reality can assist us with many of our daily operations.

Described as the next era of computing according to a Deloitte Global Report released in 2020, the report quotes “the Spatial Web is the next evolution in computing and information technology (IT), on the same trajectory that began with Web 1.0 and our current Web 2.0. We are now seeing the Spatial Web (Web 3.0) unfold, which will eventually eliminate the boundary between digital content and physical objects that we know today. We call it “spatial” because digital information will exist in space, integrated and inseparable from the physical world.”

In a separate Singularity Hub article penned by the famous Silicon Valley investor Peter Diamandis, it is mentioned that “Over the next two to five years, the world around us is about to light up with layer upon layer of rich, fun, meaningful, engaging, and dynamic data. Data you can see and interact with. This magical future ahead is called the Spatial Web and will transform every aspect of our lives, from retail and advertising, to work and education, to entertainment and social interaction.”

Gabriel René, Founder and CEO of VERSES Technologies Inc. (NEO: VERS) has dedicated his life’ work to technology, specializing in such areas as Artificial Intelligence (AI), Virtual and Augmented Reality (VR/AR), Internet of Things (IoT) and Distributed Ledger Technology (DLT) and their endless application across numerous industries. Mr. René also serves as Executive Director of the Spatial Web Foundation, whose mission is to develop and maintain the technical and ethical standards of the Spatial Web, much like the World Wide Web Consortium maintains order over the current web. Having co-authored “The Spatial Web: How Web 3.0 Will Connect Humans, Machines, and AI to Transform the World”, Gabriel René is renowned as one of the founding fathers of the progressive movement that is the Spatial Web.

Notably, Mr. René and the team at VERSES created the underlying protocols of the Spatial Web – HSTP and HSML. These protocols are presently being standardized by the IEEE (which standardized wifi, Bluetooth and ethernet), a process which is expected to be completed within 18 months.

The spatial web is built on the combined strengths of emerging modern technologies such as Virtual Reality (VR), Artificial Intelligence (AI), Internet of Things (IoT), Crypto and Blockchain amongst many more. All of these current advanced technologies can be categorized into four major computing trends:

- Immersive Computing, such as Augmented and Virtual Reality (AR/VR).

- Physical Computing, such as the Internet of Things (sensors, cameras, devices) and Robotics (autonomous vehicles).

- Cognitive Computing, such as Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML).

- Distributed Computing, which is a movement from the Cloud to the Edge that devices and robotic systems will rely on for access to real time data in place of the traditional stored or downloadable data.

The idea is that these four major trends will combine to create a singular meta trend, where their coexistence will allow communication and interoperability between the digital and physical world. This will allow future computing to move into the space around us, such as holographic or immersive information, where we either move into and experience virtual worlds or virtual contents come to us in the real world and overlay physical objects and locations.

These virtual worlds will be supported through the various sensors and robotics that will make sense and track activities and store this information as data that can be used to support the Spatial Web, such as GPS motion tracking used by Google Maps to produce real time traffic reports. This real time data (Edge) can then be distributed amongst millions of artificially intelligent Machines, allowing them to react to the environment around them, creating the foundation for the smart world of tomorrow.

For example, the current warehousing industry can be considered traditional, utilizing the power of low wage human workers to accomplish the daunting task of navigating millions of square feet to pick relentless orders placed through ecommerce websites in a timely fashion. With most websites promising next day delivery, these warehouses continually seek innovative new technologies that can help streamline processes and productivity. Although current technologies do exist, such as robotics, they can be expensive and take many months, if not years to implement.

With the help of VERSES Wayfinder App, these same workers can now be armed with a technology that tracks movements to identify and present the time saving strategies that were previously considered unattainable. Through the key placement of millions of data points, the system can generate 3D mappings of warehouses with pinpoint accuracy, and by pairing augmented human activity of current worker movements with artificial intelligence, the program not only suggests preferred warehouse layouts, but also generates exact locations of each unique order in a sequence that increases efficiencies by an astonishing 35 to 50%. By empowering its workforce with this augmented technology, owners will experience a reduction in turnover rate through an increase in overall worker satisfaction by simply allowing them to do their job more efficiently and increasing self-worth. Notably, VERSES’ first major client was a US / Canadian 3rd Party Logistics company called NRI. By implementing an AI navigation system called Wayfinder in the majority of their warehouses that effectively doubles NRI’s profitability from between US$7-8M a year to US$15M per year after paying an average of US$2.5M a year in SAAS payments to VERSES for their tech over the life of their contract.

This of course is only a small glimpse into the potential that is the Spatial Web. Futuristic technologies continue to evolve around us daily, and although we have yet to witness its potential, there are four main lenses that summarize the smart world of tomorrow. The idea relies on the combination of these four “lenses” to create the entirety of the Spatial Web and allow for seamless coexistence between man and machine.

- Web 3.0 Semantic Web, the metaverse and the creation of augmented and virtual realistic surroundings.

- Human 2.0 Transhumanism, digital health and wellbeing, the ability to physically connect humans and machines.

- Industry 4.0 Autonomous Systems, adoption of intelligent or smart factories.

- Society 5.0 Smart Society, the sustainable, inclusive socio-economic system powered by digital technologies.

The Spatial Web would thus serve and enable the interoperability of these sub sectors and their respective technologies and create a network where each can coexist and internetwork with one another. This will ultimately allow the ideologies of Web 3.0, Human 2.0, Industry 4.0 and Society 5.0 to transform from idea to reality, which possesses immeasurable benefits to the way humans live their daily lives. Technology has been the driving force behind monumental moments in human history and will continue to do so as the Spatial Web unfolds before our very eyes.

In order to fully understand the sheer potential that the Spatial Web has to offer, Mr. René has outlined a few use case scenarios that combine to create the ultimate smart world that is quickly becoming reality.

Smart Factories will see collaborative design harness the power of virtual reality and bring co-workers together in a virtual setting. Imagine having a full-scale third-dimensional model of your company’s product at your fingertips, in the middle of a room filled with your holographic co-workers as you review and implement changes to product and packaging design until items are ready to be manufactured. These final designs will then be made available to the robotics and machines that will create the products, with artificial intelligence asset tracking and automated fulfillment capabilities applied as the product moves through the factory. These items will be tracked and segregated automatically through the use of various sensors and GPS trackers and placed at pre-loaded factory locations, ready to be loaded on specific trucks according to a series of smart schedules. As the autonomous vehicles arrive on-time, the product is loaded, and the buyer is automatically charged for the items as the truck leaves the factory as per the agreed upon smart contract set up on the blockchain.

Smart Retail will allow consumers to walk in and walk out of all retail environments and automatically be charged for the products they decide to take with them. The efficiencies of shopping will increase drastically through the use of routing technology and smart mapping, which will automatically map out the path of least resistance based on pre-populated shopping lists, which will use the GPS data from both pre populated product locations and other shopper’s movements so users can avoid overcrowded aisles. The need to wait for a cashier to manually scan each item will be a thing of the past, and as the flow of goods leave stores, inventories will track and balance automatically, with automated re-stocking and baseline inventory orders placed based on pre-set standards.

These of course are only a few of many examples that can be created through the Spatial Web, and VERSES Technologies appears to be driving this ideology through the creation of its COSM platform, which allows for the creation of smart applications on the Spatial Web such as its smart warehousing software, Wayfinder. Gabriel René has made it his life’s mission to pioneer the Spatial Web and share the many advantages it beholds with society, and his company VERSES is well ahead of the market when looking to convert theory to reality and generate the smart world of tomorrow.

Observing the evolution of the internet since its infancy in the early 90’s has been the privilege of many, bearing fruits of labor off its back as the world began converting from the physical to the digital world. What remains truly amazing about the internet is its infinite potential, who’s boundaries continue to be challenged as societies validate and adjust to its influence.

The team at VERSES Technologies appears well suited to transform the very fabric that is the internet and evolving it into what was once only considered possible in futuristic Hollywood films. Appearing to be leaps and bounds ahead of its competitors, the concepts and ideas outlined by VERSES could soon become reality, and investors would be foolish to overlook the chance to take part in what surely is the opportunity of a lifetime. Every two decades or so, a seismic shift occurs in computing. From the PC to the internet (Web 1.0), from the internet to mobility (Web 2.0), and now, from mobility to the real world and the Spatial Web (Web 3.0). This is that moment.
